Abstract
The development of reading skills is essential in primary education, as it impacts academic
performance across various subjects. This research investigates the relationship between
reading motivation and the acquisition of skills in second-grade students at Educamundo
School. The objective was to determine the influence of both intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation on reading habits and academic performance.
The study adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining classroom observations and
surveys conducted with 25 students. The qualitative phase explored students' attitudes and
engagement with reading, while the quantitative phase measured the connection between
motivation and reading comprehension.
The findings revealed that many students showed low intrinsic motivation and relied on
external incentives. A preference for illustrated books and interactive activities was
observed, with the most motivated students demonstrating better fluency and
comprehension.
The research concludes that strategies like gamification, interactive storytelling, and
allowing students to choose their reading materials can enhance their interest in reading.
A stimulating reading environment strengthens reading skills and improves academic
performance in primary education.
