Abstract

The present study analyzed the differences in anxiety and depression symptomatology between caregivers of pediatric and adult oncology patients in a hospital setting. The main hypothesis proposed that significant differences would exist, expecting anxiety and depression to be higher in pediatric patient caregivers. A comparative, cross-sectional, and non-experimental research design was used, involving a total of 154 caregivers evaluated using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). Data were analyzed using JASP software, applying the T-Student test for independent samples, supplemented with the Mann-Whitney U test. The inferential analysis results revealed two main findings: for Anxiety , statistically significant differences were found between the groups (Mann-Whitney U = 4027.00, gl= 152 p < .001); however, contrary to the hypothesis, caregivers of adult oncology patients reported a significantly higher anxiety score. For Depression, no statistically significant differences were found in depression levels between both groups (t de Student = 4.413, gl= 152, p = .524). It is concluded that care for adult patients may generate a higher level of affectation in caregivers than pediatric care. Future research is recommended to control the severity of the patient's condition and the state of disease remission/progression, factors not considered in this study that could modulate the emotional and psychological impact experienced by the caregiver.
