The present research was quantitative, non-experimental, and correlational, with the general objective of analyzing the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism, academic stress, and negative rumination in university students, evaluating the mediating role of academic stress. Perfectionism is conceptualized as the tendency to establish excessively high and rigid standards, and it includes the preoccupation with errors and doubts about one's actions (Frost et al., 1990). Jurado-Botina et al. (2022) defines it as a physiological, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional response experienced by students when faced with the demands of the academic environment that they perceive as stressful. 5 Nolen-Hoeksema (1991) defines rumination as a cognitive response to distress, in which individuals repeatedly focus on the causes and consequences of their malaise without undertaking effective resolution actions. The study involved a sample of 249 university students who exhibited maladaptive perfectionism showed a higher level of academic stress, which influenced greater negative rumination. In conclusion, maladaptive perfectionism is significantly influenced by higher levels of stress and negative rumination.
