Abstract
In the present study, the mediating role of motivation in the relationship between academic stress and academic reading habit was examined in a sample of 195 university students from Guayaquil. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional, and correlational-explanatory design, three validated instruments were administered: the Systemic Cognitivist Inventory of Academic Stress (SISCO SV-21), the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), and the Self-Report Habit Index (SRHI-R). The results showed that all variables present moderate levels:
3
Academic Stress (x=4.04), Motivation (x=4.38), and Academic Reading Habit (x=3.06).
Simple mediation analysis indicated a positive and significant relationship between academic stress and motivation (r= 0.232, p< 0.002), and a positive relationship between motivation and reading habit (r= 0.430, p < 0.001). Simple mediation analysis using the Bootstrapping method partially confirmed the total mediation, showing that motivation acts as a significant and total mediator in the relationship between academic stress and academic reading habit; however, the direction of the relationship was not as expected, meaning that the moderate presence of academic stress has a positive impact on motivation, and it is this change in motivation that drives the change in reading habit.
These findings underscore the importance of fostering motivation in university wellness programs, as well as the presence of a moderate level of academic demand to foster academic habits.
