In the present study, the mediating role of motivation in the relationship between academic stress and academic reading habit was examined in a sample of 195 university students from Guayaquil. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional, and correlational-explanatory design, three validated instruments were administered: the Systemic Cognitivist Inventory of Academic Stress (SISCO SV-21), the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), and the Self-Report Habit Index (SRHI-R). The results showed that all variables present moderate levels: 3 Academic Stress (x=4.04), Motivation (x=4.38), and Academic Reading Habit (x=3.06). Simple mediation analysis indicated a positive and significant relationship between academic stress and motivation (r= 0.232, p< 0.002), and a positive relationship between motivation and reading habit (r= 0.430, p < 0.001). Simple mediation analysis using the Bootstrapping method partially confirmed the total mediation, showing that motivation acts as a significant and total mediator in the relationship between academic stress and academic reading habit; however, the direction of the relationship was not as expected, meaning that the moderate presence of academic stress has a positive impact on motivation, and it is this change in motivation that drives the change in reading habit.
