Extortion is one of the most serious crimes in Ecuador, directly affecting both individuals and institutions. Therefore, the proper management of human sources is essential to promptly clarify the facts and apprehend those responsible. However, Ecuadorian law lacks any regulations governing the use and protection of such human sources in extortion investigations, creating legal gaps and jeopardizing investigations and the safety of informants. The study has the following objectives: first, to understand the current legal framework governing the use of human sources in extortion cases, thereby highlighting existing deficiencies and gaps; second, to identify the consequences of this lack of regulation when attempting to achieve any level of effectiveness in investigations and in protecting the rights of informants; and finally, to propose guidelines for improving the ethical and legitimate handling of human sources. The methodology employed is qualitative, consisting of a literature review of Ecuadorian law, justice reports, legislation, and articles related to the issue, with the aim of compiling findings regarding existing gaps and their impact on the development of investigations. The results indicate that ethical conflicts frequently arise due to the lack of clear regulations governing the handling of informants in extortion investigations. Informants are exposed to retaliation from extortionists and manipulation by investigators, thus limiting the effectiveness of the evidence in clarifying the issues affecting citizens and increasing the impunity resulting from the lack of regulation. The creation of clear and secure regulations, security protocols, and other measures is proposed for the handling of informants and the information obtained from them.
